Summary

Neverwhere begins with an average man named Richard Mayhew.  He stumbles across Door, an injured girl on the streets of London, and of course he stops to assist her.  Shortly after doing this, Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar show up at his door claiming that they are Door's brothers and demand that she is returned to them.  The two men make their way into his house, but by that time Door has disappeared.  Richard is amazed and by this time he realizes that he is in for more than in which he bargained.

Door then begins to show him London below, and prove to him how little he really knows about the city in which he lives.  It isn't until Door leaves him that he becomes aware that he is no longer visible to the people above ground.  No one can see him- not even his fiancée Jessica.  He comes home to his apartment only to find that two other people have moved in.  Desperate to get his life back, Richard seeks out London below on a quest to find Door and set things right.  He quickly learns that he is in way over his head.  He is reunited with Door and remains with her throughout the novel.  She takes him on a journey he will never forget where he meets many interesting people such as rat speakers, Hunter the bodyguard, Old Bailey, or Marquis de Carabas.  He encounters many obstacles such as crossing the bridge, facing the Darkness, and defeating the Beast.  However, his main goal is to get his old life back.  Will this ever happen? To find out, you'll have to read the novel!
